Hemant Virkar

Mr. Hemant Virkar

Hemant Virkar, Digital Infuzion’s visionary founder, thrives on connecting the dots between “what Digital Infuzion is” and “what it strives to be.” Inspired by a passion to dramatically improve healthcare industry quality, Hemant envisions IT in healthcare as being as important as it is in the financial and other industries, where accurate information is available in real-time, on any device, and provides in-depth as well as longitudinal information at your fingertips.

Hemant has felt the detriments of inefficient medical information exchange, unavailability of vital information in real-time, and the absence of longitudinal information and basic information retrieval from disparate data sources. In his experience, the resultant delays in decision making prompted medical experts and Hemant to delve into medical literature and other resources to better understand the nuances of the disease and the patient’s case. Soon, Hemant realized that cancer researchers and healthcare providers were unable to exchange critical information and data using the latest technologies, and he became determined to contribute his expertise and risk his personal assets to make real improvements for the healthcare industry and patient care.

Having worked with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in various capacities, Hemant understands the business, operational and transactional sides of healthcare informatics. Yet, it was his family’s experience on the patient side of healthcare that ignited his passion to advance the emerging field of bioinformatics.

Hemant launched his mission—Digital Infuzion—in 1999. Collaborating with key industry players and soon with clients from the NIH to Harvard Medical School, he began making a difference by developing better IT systems that contribute to the improved quality and service of care. To further the mission, he developed a scientific team within Digital Infuzion to continually enhance existing tools and technologies and to challenge the status-quo in delivering cutting-edge, best-of-breed, and best-value IT solutions to some of the world’s leading biomedical research and healthcare organizations. Further, Digital Infuzion’s R&D team has produced patented bioinformatics technologies to enable scientists to query large datasets and bolster their potential to yield lifesaving discoveries. Among his accomplishments, Hemant has grown the Digital Infuzion family by a factor of 10, with more than 80 employees, and corporate revenue by more than 20.

Today, Hemant—who is, at heart, a philanthropist, trainer, and inspirational force to the organization—mentors Digital Infuzion employees, and expanding the successes to other disease areas in much need, such as HIV and AIDS, to support the corporate mission, knowing that prolonged, consistent effort can make a positive difference in for healthcare providers and patient care.
